When he first entered the doors at cdcb YouthBuild Brownsville. in Brownsville, Texas, Rolando was carrying the weight of a recent loss in his family along with personal challenges that made it difficult to stay focused and grounded. Despite these obstacles, he showed up with determination, slowly rebuilding his confidence while learning to navigate his emotions, rediscover his identity, and trust his own potential. His early months in the program were marked by quiet resilience, with small steps forward, moments of vulnerability, and a growing belief that he could shape a different future for himself.
While Rolando trained in construction and studied for his GED at YouthBuild, he was also deepening his skills in teamwork and collaboration. As he found his footing, his natural leadership began to shine. One of his most significant accomplishments was serving as a student leader for The YouthBuild Story Fashion Fundraiser, a rooftop community event hosted by come dream come build (cdcb), the sponsoring organization for the program, during the grand opening of a historic building in downtown Brownsville. Rolando played a central role in identifying the need to showcase YouthBuild students’ growth, confidence, and transformation through creative expression. He embraced multiple leadership responsibilities by designing his own look, modeling in the show, and encouraging his peers to step forward with pride, even when they felt unsure or hesitant.
His featured look, Diamond Legacy, symbolized growth, triumph, and transformation realized. It reflected not only his personal journey but the shared experience of every YouthBuild student who begins unseen and uncertain yet emerges with purpose, strength, and clarity. Rolando’s creativity, courage, and ability to uplift others made him a driving force behind the project’s success and a true representation of YouthBuild Brownsville’s spirit.
By the time he completed the program, he not only had earned his GED and industry-recognized construction credentials to prepare him for his career, he was ready to step out into his bright future as a leader. Because of YouthBuild, Rolando had not only overcome personal barriers, but had become a role model and a reminder of what is possible when perseverance meets training and opportunity.
“My experience at YouthBuild taught me to keep on dreaming and never give up because everything in life has a reason, and I found mine here,” says Rolando.”
