National discount retailer’s annual community giving helps strengthen programming in local YouthBuild programs across the country
Burlington Stores, Inc., a national discount retailer offering low prices every day on brand name merchandise for the entire family and home, has raised over $1.4 million during its third annual in-store fundraising campaign to benefit YouthBuild Global and its expansive network of local YouthBuild programs.
In YouthBuild programs, opportunity youth—young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 who are neither in school nor employed—reclaim their education, gain job skills and credentials, and become leaders in their communities. As headquarters for the YouthBuild movement, YouthBuild Global unifies and partners with a network of more than 320 YouthBuild programs around the world, championing opportunity youth as they achieve their ambitions and reach their full potential.
The funds raised will advance YouthBuild Global’s mission and strengthen the programming of YouthBuild programs nationwide. This year, Burlington furthered its customer-giving partnerships with four national nonprofit organizations, including YouthBuild Global, all of whom are committed to creating tangible change by empowering people to live better lives and build brighter futures.
“We are deeply grateful for Burlington’s ongoing partnership and belief in the power of young people,” said John Valverde, president and CEO of YouthBuild Global. “Their support fortifies the education, workforce training, and comprehensive services provided to YouthBuild students around the world, helping them build brighter futures and stronger communities. We could never achieve our goals as a network without collaboration, and we’re so thankful to all Burlington’s associates and customers for standing with us and the incredible young leaders we serve.”
YouthBuild programs across the country have used resources generated from this partnership to bolster education, workforce readiness, and leadership programming. Some examples include:
- LearningWorks YouthBuild, Portland, Maine: Established on-site mental health access for its students. By hiring a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, each LearningWorks YouthBuild participant was able to attend at least two counseling sessions, and some meet with the counselor as much as weekly. Since the implementation of onsite counseling, the program’s student retention rate has increased from 85% to 97% this past year.
- Georgia Building Trades Academy (GABTA) YouthBuild, Atlanta, Georgia: Provided specialized construction training tools, materials, and essential support that participants would not have had otherwise. With the rising cost of materials, funding helped bridge the gap and ensured students received hands-on experience with industry-recommended tools used in construction trades apprenticeships.
- South Los Angeles YouthBuild, California: Enhanced exposure, access, and interest in career pathways through the innovative use of virtual reality technology. Funds have helped 19 South LA YouthBuild students so far to receive immersive training in career exploration, accessing experience and skills needed for well-paying jobs.
