Programs must review the Request for Applications (RFA) document in order to complete the application itself. Up-to-date information will be listed at this webpage regarding the application process.
AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages more than 85,000 Americans each year in intensive service that meets critical community needs and can make a major impact in improving education; energy conservation; the health of all Americans; economic opportunity for economically vulnerable individuals; increasing service by and for veterans; and providing disaster services. Since the creation of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), YouthBuild USA has been an AmeriCorps National Direct Grantee. YouthBuild AmeriCorps members engage in service through their vocational training, while simultaneously receiving skill and leadership development opportunities during their service term. AmeriCorps is a natural overlay to the YouthBuild program.
We will be holding an AmeriCorps Bidders’ Webinar on Tuesday, November 13th, 2012 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm E.S.T. The webinar will address the requirements of the application as well as be a forum for YouthBuild programs to ask questions about being a part of the YouthBuild AmeriCorps Initiative. We strongly encourage you to participate in the call if your program is interested in applying. (For programs that have previously applied through State Service Commissions, please note that this process and its requirements may be different.) The webinar will be recorded and will be available for viewing afterwards. If your program cannot attend the live webinar, please contact email@example.com to request a link to the recorded webinar. In order for YouthBuild USA to plan its review process, we need to have a clear idea of what applications we will be receiving. This will enable us to begin the process of collecting information from other grant managers, and YouthBuild USA’s Affiliated Network, and will allow us to start consultation with State Service Commissions. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org with the program’s primary application contact information no later than 5 pm EST on Thursday, November, 15th, 2012 if your program intends to submit an AmeriCorps application
The program’s proposal is due to YouthBuild USA no later than 5pm EST on Monday, December 3rd, 2012. The application must be e-mailed to email@example.com. Applications that are incomplete or late and which are not e-mailed, WILL NOT be considered.
If YouthBuild USA staff has any questions or clarifications regarding your program’s application, we will email the contact person that your program identified on the AmeriCorps application to set up a conference call. These calls will occur December 10-21, 2012. The calls will be scheduled for 30 minutes and the program staff member who will have day to day responsibility for the YouthBuild AmeriCorps program is a required attendee. Please plan to make yourself available to participate should we schedule a call, but know that if we have no immediate questions about your application that will impact our overall application to CNCS, we may not call you.
It is important to note that this year; CNCS has exhibited a strong commitment to including disadvantaged populations as SERVICE-PROVIDERS in their own communities, not just service-receivers. Specifically, CNCS has moved programs that engage economically disadvantaged AmeriCorps members who had previously been unemployed and who secure employment during their term of service or within one year of completion into its top tier for priority funding!
Here is a quote from the FY 2013 NOFO from CNCS:
"CNCS believes that all Americans should have opportunities to participate in national service, including those communities that have been traditionally underrepresented in national service, such as rural residents, veterans and military families, Native Americans, and “Opportunity Youth,” the one in six young people (ages 16-24) who are disconnected from school or work. CNCS recognizes that service can create powerful pathways to education and employment for these populations, transforming their communities and creating broad economic benefit for the country."
We are excited to put forth a proposal on behalf of the YouthBuild network’s collective great work to the Corporation for National and Community Service and which explicitly meets this priority!
In the spirit of service,
YouthBuild USA’s AmeriCorps Team
