Akron YouthBuild, in partnership with Saint-Gobain, has completed a green renovation of the first home in Akron expected to achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification. In 16 months, with the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation, YouthBuild Akron students transformed the once-dilapidated property into a model of affordable, sustainable urban living.

The project that broke ground in January 2012 is expected to be only the seventh home in the Buckeye State and first home in Summit County to receive the distinguished designation from the USGBC. Over 20 YouthBuild Akron students engaged in the renovation.

“It was one way of giving back to the community. I have advanced my carpentry skills and learned about green building.” Akron YouthBuild student Curtis Taylor wrote during the project on Building Our Future Together, the partnership blog of the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation and YouthBuild USA. In March 2013, the transformed sustainable home was leased to a low to moderate income family, pre-qualified by the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority.

The three-year Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation partnership with YouthBuild USA supports green home renovation projects with three other YouthBuild programs, YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School, YouthBuild Worcester, and YouthBuild Schenectady.

On May 29, Akron YouthBuild will be joined by Saint-Gobain and YouthBuild USA for a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the completion of the renovation. Click to download the press release and press-kit for the event.
